Ensure peaceful celebration of Durga Puja: IGP


Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Monday directed his colleagues to perform their duty professionally and sincerely so that the Hindu community can celebrate Durga Puja in a festive mood.He issued the order at a meeting on security of Durga Puja held at the Police Headquarters.The country’s Hindu community will celebrate their largest religious festival on October 11.

At the meeting, the IGP asked the police officials to remain alert so that no vested quarter gets any chance to frustrate the prevailing stable law-and-order situation centring Durga Puja. “Involve mass people (in maintaining security) through community policing,” he added.Meeting sources said AIG (Confidential) of the Police Headquarters Monirul Islam made a power point presentation on the security measures taken for Durga Puja. The meeting discussed elaborately the overall security of Puja Mandaps being set up across the country.Around 19,000 Puja Mandaps will be set up across the country to celebrate the biggest Hindu religious festival this year, according to Hindu community leaders.The community leaders, who attended the meeting, expressed their satisfaction over the security arrangements taken by the police, and hoped that the celebrations will pass off peacefully like previous years.Among others, senior police officers of the Police Headquarters, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) Benazir Ahmed, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia, leaders of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Committee and Mahanagar Puja Udjapan Committee attended the meeting.
