Ensure safe motherhood for all expecting mothers


Health experts at a post-rally discussion have stressed for ensuring safe motherhood for healthy newborn babies and their beautiful life through proper nursing during pregnancy, planned birth and safe delivery.They were addressing the discussion arranged at the conference room of the Civil Surgeon at Panchagarh town today (Thursday) to observe the National Safe Motherhood Day-2015 with theme of ‘Let every birth be planned, Let every delivery be safe.’The Health and Family Planning Department of Panchagarh with assistance of different organisations under the Joint GOB-UN Maternal and Neonatal Health Initiative brought out the rally and organized the discussion in the Sub-Himalayan district town to observe the day.Earlier, the government and NGO officials, physicians, health workers and activists, nurses, mothers, public representatives, teachers, students, women community leaders, socio-cultural activists and prominent persons participated in the rally.Administrator of Panchagarh Zila Parishad Advocate Abu Bakar Siddique attended and addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Civil Surgeon of Panchagarh Dr Ahad Ali in the chair.District Livestock Officer of Panchagarh Dr Akhteruzzaman Bhuiyan, General Secretary of District unit of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Dr Mansur Alam, Medical Officer Dr Afroza Begum, UNICEF Representative Md. Samsuzzaman, Medical Officer of Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB) Dr Mosaddek Hossain, BRAC Representative AK Azad and journalist Shahidul Islam Shahid addressed as special guests.Officials and employees of the Civil Surgeon Office, Family Planning Department, BRAC, RDRS Bangladesh, Surjer Hashi Clinic, FPAB, Merry Stopes, Family Planning Association of Bangladesh and different NGOs were present.The health experts put importance on coordinated efforts of all concerned to ensure safe motherhood, healthy pregnancy period and safe delivery for building a healthier nation through further reducing maternal and neonatal deaths.They put especial emphasis on ensuring safe pregnancy, delivery and motherhood for pregnant women at the hospitals, health complexes and other places as it would help the nation in achieving at set Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the earliest.The chief guest highly lauded the government efforts for providing health services at the union and wards to improve the health condition of mothers and babies and asked for sensitising people about essence for ensuring sound health of mothers and infants. -BSS, Rangpur
