Ex OC Helal sent to prison upon surrender

Former Officer-in-Charge of Khilgaon Police Station in the capital, Helal Uddin on Sunday afternoon surrendered to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka in a case filed against him for torturing former Dhaka University student Abdul Kader.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Alamgir Kabir Raj sent Helal to the prison rejecting his bail petition. Helal’s lawyer told the court that his client would file an appeal against the verdict of the CMM Court that sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment.On May 18, the CMM Court sentenced Helal to three years’ simple imprisonment for torturing Abdul Kadar with a machete in custody and falsely implicating him in three cases in 2011.
At the police station, Helal had hit Kader’s leg with a machete to force him confess about his involvement in various crimes, which he had never committed.
Helal and then SI Alam Badshah and ASI Shahidur Rahman of Khilgaon Police Station were suspended in 2012. Kadar was freed on bail on August 3, 2011, after 18 days of his detention. Later, the court acquitted him in the cases filed against him.
Then a master’s student at Dhaka University’s biochemistry and molecular biology department, Kadar filed the case on January 23, 2012 with Khilgaon Police Station against Helal following a court order. The charge sheet was submitted to the court on March 26. Kadar is now a teacher at Laksmipur Government College. – Court Correspondent
