Expart finds EIA on Rampal power plant inappropriate

Dhaka, June 10 – The government’s report on the possible impacts of Rampal Power Plant Project on the environment did not properly evaluate its potential risks, said a National Committee report on Saturday.Prof Dr Anwar Hossain, an agricultural and environmental expert, presented a report titled ‘Critical Review of Shipping and Dredging Plans to Facilitate Coal Transport for the Coal-fired Power Plant at Rampal’, on behalf of the National Committee to Protect the Sundarbans and Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), at Dhaka University’s Sirajul Islam Lecture Hall.
Dr William Kleindl of University of Montana and Dr Jon Brodie of James Cook University jointly prepared the report free of cost.
Prof Anwar Hossain said the Bangladesh government neither specify where the dredging sediments will be dumped nor evaluate the threat to the aquatic species due to the digging.
“No arrangement has been made either to address accidental incidents in the coal sector. There was no adequate review of the risks emerging from the Coal Transshipment at Akram Point,” he added.
BAPA General Secretary and Member of National Committee for Protecting the Sundarbans Abdul Matin alleged, “The EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) report that the government has made for the transportation of coal and river dredging of the project has not been done properly. It’s proven in scientific research today.”
BAPA vice-president Rasheda K Chowdhury, Prof MM Akash, Prof Badrul Imam, Prof M Shahidul Islam and BAPA joint secretary Mihir Biswas were present here. – UNB
