Extensive jute cultivation programme taken in Gaibandha

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken up an extensive programme on jute cultivation in the district during the current season.
Office sources said a total of 13,309 hectares of land in seven upazilas in the district would be brought under this cultivation programme this year with the production target of 1, 71,776 bales of jute.Of the total, some 1,735 hectares of land would be cultivated in Sadar Upazila, 1,150 in Sadullapur, 340 in Palashbari, 1,400 in Gobindaganj, 4,225 in Sundarganj, 3,150 in Saghata and 3,863 in Fuchhari Upazila of the district, sources said.To make the cultivation a grand success, the BADC was selling high quality seed like O-9897, O-72 and JRO-524 among the farmers through their recognized dealers and three sale centres located at Sadar, Gobindaganj and Palashbari upazila headquarters here, sources said.DAE has also taken up necessary measures for growers’ training, easy availability of fertilizers, pesticides and other agri inputs at fair prices to help the farmers boost production of the crop, said district training officer of DAE Julfikar Haider.Over 10,570 hectares of land have been cultivated in the district till April 18 and the rest would be cultivated within short time, said Syder Rahman, an official of DAE office.Talking to BSS, deputy director of DAE Mir Abdur Razzak said the farmers of the district were showing their keen interest in cultivating jute this year as they have got high price of jute in last season. -BSS, Gaibandha
