Police on Tuesday pressed charges against 43 leaders and activists of the then 19-party alliance, including BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a case filed with Paltan Police Station in 2014.Sub-inspector of the police station Tabibur Rahman submitted two charge-sheets — one for torching vehicles and the other under the Explosive Substances Act — to SI Jalal Uddin, general recording officer of the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
SI Tabibur Rahman, also investigation officer of the case, also filed a petition with the court seeking warrants for the arrest of 30 alliance leaders, including Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, Barkatullah Bulu, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Sharafat Ali Shafu and Sultan Salauddin Tuku.
Of the accused, 13, including Fakhrul, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP leaders Amanullah Aman, Mirza Abbas and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, are out of jail on bail.
On December 29, 2014, assistant sub-inspector of Paltan Police Station Abdul Malek Hawlader filed a case against 43 named leaders of the then 19-party alliance and 50-60 unknown combine men with the police station for torching vehicles after vandalising those and obstructing police from performing their duties.
