Forge national unity to combat extremism – Fakhrul


BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday called for forging national unity to combat militancy and extremism in the country.
“A national unity comprising all quarters, political parties and conscious citizens has to be developed to combat the present crises including the militancy and extremism. The government must take initiative in this regard,” he said while talking to reporters at BNP headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city.Terming militancy as a major problem in the world today, he said all the conscious people and believers in democracy are united against the extremism.  “But it is unfortunate that it is used for dirty politics in Bangladesh,” he said.
The BNP leader apprehended that militants and extremists may rise if the country runs in absence of democracy.
He reiterated that an inclusive general election under a neutral administration is a must to reach national consensus.
“We are very concerned over different incidents including the killing of two foreigners. The nation has also become concern over the recent incidents. People are talking about the militancy at different places,” he said.
Fakhrul called upon the government to find out the real culprits involved in the killing of two foreigners and to shun the path of petty political interests and of harassing BNP leaders and activists.
He said there is no coherence between two sections of the government over the two the killing of the two foreigners. Where one side is saying that the IS was involved in the killings but another side is claiming there is no involvement of IS with the killings.
Replying to a question, he said BNP chairperson would return home after completion of her health check up and eyes treatment.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu, party spokesperson Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon and organisation secretary Fazlul Haque Milon, among others, were present on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
