Founding anniversary: BNP will certainly overcome: Khaleda


Dhaka – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday paid rich tributes to party founder late President Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his mazar at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar to mark the party 38th founding anniversary.The former premier flanked by party leaders and activists went to the mazar at around 12:20pm and offered fateha there. Khaleda, who is also the widow of President Zia, also took part in a doa mahfil for the salvation of departed soul of Zia.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the mazar, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who among others accompanied Khaleda, accused the government of resorting to carrying out steamroller of repression on the leaders and activists to eliminate the party.
“The government is hatching conspiracy to eliminate the BNP,” he said adding that the BNP is a party of the people and it would not be possible to defeat it.
The BNP leader said the BNP would certainly turn around facing all obstacles as it had done it in the past. The democracy will be established under the leadership of Khaleda Zia, he added.
Fakhrul said the BNP would strengthen the movement to restore the democracy and rights of the people.
Among others, BNP standing committee members—Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Jamir Uddin Sircar, ASM Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice-chairmen Selima Rahman, Mohammad Shahjahan and joint secretaries general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Khairul Kabir Khokon were present.
Leaders and activists of different units and associate bodies of the party also placed wreaths at the mazar of late President on the occasion.
The party celebrates the founding anniversary through various programmes. The party hoisted national and party flags atop the buildings of party central office at Naya Paltan and other offices across the country to mark the day.
Alamgir said Ziaur Rahman had established the BNP to fulfill the political vacuum which he said was created after establishment of the one-party government. – Staff Reporter
