The District and Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Thursday sentenced four persons to death for killing a couple, their five-year old son and three-year old daughter in South Keraniganj. Judge SM Quddus Zaman pronounced the verdict in his crowded courtroom. The death sentenced convicts are Moniruzzan Sumon, Jakaria Hossain Jony, Sumon alias CNG Sumon, 30, and Nazir Uddin. Earlier, the four convicts gave confessional statements in a court admitting their involvement in the murder under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
However, the court acquitted Afsana Akter, wife of convicted Moniruzzaman Sumon, as the charges were not proved against her.
On Sep 25, 2014, the bodies of auto-rickshaw driver Saju Ahmed, 35, his wife Razia Begum, 26, son Imran, 7, and daughter Sanzida, 2, were recovered from their house in Kadampur area of South Keraniganj.
Investigations revealed that Saju Ahmed and the convicts were members of a gang of robbers. Police said the gruesome killings were a sequel to a feud among them in connection with sharing of their looted items.
Police pressed charges against five suspects within two months of their arrests. The trial concluded on Nov 16 this year and the court set Thursday to deliver its verdict.
