Geography fair held at Jahangirnagar University


The role man to protect the environment, sustain ecological balance and enhance public awareness about the environment was emphasised at a geography fair-2015 organied amid fanfare and festivity at the Jahangirnagar University (JU) Geography Association (JUGA) on Saturday.Like every year JUGA organised the function where students of the Geography and Environment (G&E) department display a variety of Geography and Environmental modelon on Bangladesh, said the convener of the fair and lecturer of the department Bibi Hafsa.
The Chairman of the department Prof Sajed Ashraf Karim inaugurated the fair as chief guest while Prof A Z M Shoeb of Rajshahi University (RU) attended the progrmme as special guest.
Among others Country’s renowned environmentalist Prof Dr Sheikh Tawhidul Islam, Prof Shahedur Rashid, Khandakar Hasan Mahmud, Rezaul Roni, Mehedi Iqbal, Alamgir Hossen Bhuyan, Anarul Haque Mondal attended the function.
Prof Sajed said, ‘In order to increase public awareness like in all years students of the department organise the fair even with limited resources. We should help defend the environment balance,’ he said.
“Directly or indirectly we urselves are degrading the environment around us, and if this trend continues, eventually we will be facing a big loss, he added.
The Renowned environmentalist Prof Dr Sheikh Tawhidul Islam said, ‘to increase public awareness and protect the environment, the student’s modeling exercise would be very rewarding and I would like request the university administration to expand such programmes’, he added.
Tawfiqul Islam Khan, a fourth year student who was a member of the modeling group said through our practical knowledge we’re gaining a model for the country and we want to highlight our country’s environment to the globe.
Notaably, students of the department, showed a variety of models under a total of ten titles in the fair. – JU Correspondent
