Dhaka – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday urged the voters of Gazipur to be there at polling stations since morning to cast ballots on Tuesday braving all barriers.“I call upon the people of Gazipur to exercise your constitutional right to franchise. Go to voting centres since morning defying all obstacles, and cast your votes,” he said.
Fakhrul made the call at a press conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
He also urged the Election Commission to take proper steps to ensure a neutral and credible election in Gazipur. “Take measures so that our valued voters can give votes.”
The BNP leader said the EC will have to resign if it fails to ensure credible and acceptable polls.
He also called upon the media to play a fair role in presenting news on the Gazipur polls.
Fakhrul hoped that their party mayoral candidate Hassan Uddin Sarker will win with a margin of over one-lakh votes if the election is held in an acceptable and neutral manner.
He also said their party’s joining in the three upcoming city polls largely depends on the Gazipur ones.
Replying to a question, the BNP secretary general said their party has finlaised polling agents of Sarker for every polling station keeping alternatives. “Whether our agents will be able to stay at the voting centres or not, it depends on the Election Commission’s neutrality and the ruling party’s attitude.”
BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, who visited Gazipur on Saturday, alleged that police is working in favour of Awami League there. “It seems the Gazipur SP himself is the Awami League candidate. Police have become voters’ opponents there.”
