Dhaka – Education ministry has formed a committee to investigate the activities of the Peace Schools in the country.
The committee has two members who would submit the report to the ministry within two weeks, ministry sources said.
One of the committee members said they would investigate different matters including the finance of the schools and what is taught there.
It has been learnt that there are around 27 Peace Schools including five in the capital. There is allegation that these schools are operated in line with the ideals of the ‘controversial’ televangelist Dr Zakir Naik by adding ‘Peace’ to their names.
The government recently banned the broadcast of the television channel ‘Peace TV’ in the country when allegations were brought against Zakir Naik that at least two of the militants at Gulshan attack were inspired by his speech to commit militant activities.
Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka sources said they gave the temporary registration of a Peace School in the city’s Lalmatia area and rest of the schools are unregistered.
ATM Moinul Hossain, inspector of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka said it does not need any permission for running private educational institutions.
At first the institution is set up to start the activities and later the authority apply for registration, he added. Later government investigates the overall matters of the institution and give the registration to continue operating after satisfaction, he said.
Another education ministry official preferring anonymity said the government has spotted the Peace Schools to find out whether such schools are being operated following the ideals of Zakir Naik.
If such schools are operated following the ideals of Zakir Naik, it would face the music, the official said.
After the militant attack at the Gulshan café, the government has become alert to investigate the activities of different educational institutions as some of the militants were from renowned educational institutions.
About the Peace Schools, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid earlier said they are looking into the matter seriously.
