Observing that the present government has already become illegal, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) general secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan on Sunday said this government has no authority to take important national decisions.

Addressing a press conference at the south hall of SCBA Bhaban, he also said as per the Constitution, the government in the last 90 days of the tenure will be treated as a polls-time government. “This election-time government has no authority to take important national decisions.”

He urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down. Explaining articles 7, 55(3), 72(1), 123 and 143(3) of the national charter, Khokan said these stipulate that the government in the last 90 days is not a normal government. “There’s no scope for ensuring Cabinet’s accountability to parliament during the period.”

Referring to June 6 speech of the Prime Minister that October 25 would be the last day of the present parliament, the SCBA general secretary said, “So, the tenure of the present government ended on October 25 as per the speech of the Prime Minister. The government has no validity after October 25 as per the Constitution.” He also alleged that the government amended the Constitution to cling to power for ever. – UNB
