Dhaka-Bringing the allegation of ‘widespread irregularities’ in Tk 10 per-kilo rice programme, BNP on Thursday alleged that the government is deceiving poor people by launching such a programme to create a scope for ruling party men to ‘make money’.“Ruling party men have been in plundering in the name of providing rice to the poor at Tk 10 per kg. The government has initiated the project to cling to power by giving its leaders and activists illegal and unethical financial benefits,” said party vice chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu.
He came up with the allegation while speaking at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
On September 7, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated a programme at Kurigram’s Chilmari to sell rice at Tk 10 per kg to 50 lakh ultra poor families across the country under the ‘Food-friendly Programme’.
Dudu alleged that there have been widespread irregularities in appointing rice dealers, its distribution and making the list of beneficiaries due to extreme politicisation.
He alleged that the ruling party men are buying the rice and selling those to wholesalers at high prices.
“The country’s people think this programme is nothing, but the government’s a ploy to make ruling party leaders and activists financially benefited through a syndicate by deceiving people,” the BNP leader said.
He said the ruling party men are plundering public money and property in an unprecedented way as there is no elected and accountable government in the country.
Dudu urged the government to take effective steps to check the irregularities and corruption in the Food-friendly Programme.
