BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said yesterday the government intends to divert attention from Bangladesh Bank cyber heist and Tonu murder incidents by arresting Shafik Rehman. The arrest incident of the veteran journalist proves that the government is suffering from nervousness, he said.
The BNP spokesperson came up with the remark while speaking at a discussion organised by National Peoples Party (NPP) in protest against the detention of Shafik Rehman at Dhaka Reporters Unity yesterday.
He claimed that the senior journalist Shafik Rehman and Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman were not involved with the “conspiracy” of abducting prime minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
“Whenever the government face any problems over any issue, it creates another issue for the people. When the students, teachers and people are raising voice against the incidents like Tonu murder and Bangladesh Bank reserve heist, the government arrested Shafik Rehman to divert attention from these two serious scandals,” said the BNP leader.
The protest programme demanded release of all political prisoners including Shafik Rehman, Mahmudur Rahman and Shaukat Mahmood.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the police arrested senior journalist and former editor of daily Jai Jai Din Shafik Rehman on 16 this month over an alleged plot to abduct and kill Sajeeb Wazed Joy. The 81-year-old journalist was later placed on a 5-day remand.
