Govt must take responsibility for any chaos: BNP

BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Monday said the ruling Awami League must take the responsibility in case of any chaotic situation in the country for its desperate bid to cling to power.

“They (govt) want to hang onto power by destabilising the situation and then imposing state of emergency. They must take responsibility if any anarchic situation is created for their ill-attempt to stay in power through muscle power,” he said.

The BNP leader came up with the strong remark while addressing a discussion organised by Ducsu (Dhaka University Central Students’ Union) and All-party Students’ Unity (Apsu) of ‘90 at the National Press Club demanding the release of arrested opposition leaders.

Criticising the government for its alleged corruption and various misdeeds, Khandaker Mosharraf said, “Awami League is going back to Baksal. They’re trying to fish in troubled waters and stay in power through improper means.”

Charging the government with trying to foil the opposition movement through killing people, the BNP policymaker said, “They (govt) have lost moral grounds to be there in power any more.”

Alleging that Awami League has always extended its support to anti-democratic forces, he said they are now heading towards the same

Renewing his party’s demand for the restoration of caretaker government system, he said, “There’s no alternative to holding the next general election under the non-party caretaker government to save the country from
the political crisis.”

About Mahmudur Rahman’s arrest, the former minister criticised the government for its action against the Amar Desh acting editor and closing down its printing press.

Held with BNP’s education affairs secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon in the chair, the programme was addressed, among others, by party international affairs secretary Assaduzzaman Ripon, organising secretary Fazlul Haque Milon and Mahila Dal general secretary Shirin Sultana.UNB
