Govt not afraid, knows BNP’s strength: Hanif

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-Ul-Alam Hanif has dismissed BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s warning that the situation may go out of control if fresh election is delayed. “The government is not afraid of Khaleda Zia’s warning as it knows about the strength of BNP’s movement,” he said on Saturday hours after the BNP leader’s remarks. He said “BNP is issuing one ultimatum after another, but nothing has come out it. BNP has no organizational strengthen to wage any movement.” Hanif was talking to journalists at his office at TCB Bhaban at Karwan Bazar. Earlier in the day Khaleda warned that if the government delays fresh general election under the non-party caretaker government the situation may spin out of control anytime. “There’s still time…hold a fresh election under a non-party caretaker government,” she told a rally of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum at Jatiya Press Club. BNP and its allies boycotted the Jan. 5 parliamentary election as it was held under the incumbent government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina’s Awami League and its allies swept the largely uncontested vote. Saturday’s rally was shifted to National Press Club after police refused permission to hold it on Supreme Court premises, the venue scheduled for it. Hanif alleged that Khaleda wanted to hold rally on the Supreme Court premises to destroy the judiciary. He said Khaleda is upset with judiciary as corruption charges against her and her family members are under trial. – UNB
