Growing repressive acts only to hasten govt fall: BNP

BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman on Tuesday warned that the government’s ‘growing repressive acts’ cannot suppress their movement as it will only hasten the Awami League regime’s fall. “It’s not possible to suppress a movement with arms and repressive acts in a developing country. The more you (govt) will resort to killing, forced disappearance, repression and arrest, the greater pace our movement will gather to ensure your fall,” he said. The BNP leader was addressing a human chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Dhaka district unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal demanding the release of all the arrested BNP leaders and activists, including its standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and joint secretary general Amanullah Aman. Accusing the government of capturing power by force, Noman said all the activities of the current regime are illegal as it is not elected by people’s vote. “This illegal Awami League regime is plotting to keep opposition leaders away from politics by resorting to killing, forced disappearance and repression. The current MPs are usurper, not the representatives of people. The people of Bangladesh do not consider them as members of parliament,” he said. Charging the ruling party with snatching people’s right to freedom of speech, Noman alleged that the government is imprisoning BNP leaders and activists after implicating them in ‘false cases’ in its frantic bid to hang onto power. Voicing deep concern over the increasing incidents of abduction and forced disappearance, the BNP leader said the country’s people have no security as they are being abducted in broad daylight. Mentioning that people got fed up with the regime’s misrule, he urged the party leaders and activists to get ready for a strong movement to free the nation from the grasp of the current ‘repressive and illegal government’. – UNB
