HC acquits Ershad of graft case

The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday acquitted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’a special emissary and Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad in a 25-year- old graft case.A High Court bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty passed the order, accepting Ershad’s appeal against the verdict of the trial court. The subordinate court sentenced HM Ershad to three years' imprisonment in the case. Besides, the High Court rejected two petitions, filed by the government for extending the jail term of Ershad.
UNB adds: Earlier on 12 April, the High Court fixed 9 May for delivering judgment on three petitions — one filed by HM Ershad and two others by the government.
Former Bureau of Anti-Corruption filed the case against HM Ershad with Cantonment Police Station on 8 January, 1991 on the charge of misappropriation Tk 1.91 crore, misusing his official position on different occasions, when he was the President of the state from December 11, 1983 to December 6, 1990. Earlier, on February 3, 1992, a Dhaka court convicted him in the graft case and sentenced him to three years' imprisonment. The court also directed the authorities concerned to confiscate the money and a Toyota Land-Cruiser jeep from Ershad.
Later, Ershad filed an appeal with the High Court the same year challenging the subordinate court verdict. Considering the appeal, the apex court stayed the verdict of the subordinate court.
The ACC, on February 26, 2012 became a party to the case with the High Court as the Bureau of Anti-Corruption BAC was not then functional.
