HC asks for Narail housewife torturers’ arrest in 48 hours


The High Court on Sunday ordered the authorities concerned to arrest within 48 hours those who tortured a housewife after tying her up with a tree in Lohagora upazila, Narail.
An HC bench comprising Justice Qazi Rejaul Haque and Justice Abu Taher M Saifur Rahman passed the order after hearing on a writ petition.
The court asked the Narail deputy commissioner and the Lohagora thana officer-in-charge (OC) to submit a compliance report before it by May 18 over the arrest of the torturers.The court also directed the authorities concerned, including the Narail deputy commissioner, the police super, the Lohagorah Upazila Nirbahi Officer and the Lohagorah thana officer-in-charge, to ensure the security of victim Babita Khanam and her treatment.
The court also issued a rule asking the relevant authorities to explain why a directive would not be issued to take legal action against the culprits under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
On April 30, Shafiqul Sheikh along with other family members beat his wife Babita Khanam after tying her up with a tree at Shalbarad village in Lohagara upazila.
Later, victim’s mother Khadiza Begum filed a case against seven people, including victim’s husband Shafiqul Sheikh, with Lohagara police station on May 5.
Babita is now undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital.
On May 8, a report related to the torture on the housewife was published in a vernacular daily.
Following the report, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), a human rights organization, filed a writ petition with the High Court. – UNB
