The High Court (HC) on Thursday ordered the authorities to demolish and remove within 72 hours all the illegal structures, excepting a grave, on the Central Shaheed Minar premises in the city.An HC bench comprising Justice Kazi Reza-ul Haque and Justice Taher Md Saifur Rahman gave the order in the final hearing on a writ petition filed by historian Prof Muntasir Mamun of Dhaka University (DU).
The respondents are: Vice Chancellor of DU, Executive Engineer (Civil Division), Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka and Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station.
Advocate Manzil Morshed, who represented the petitioner during the hearing, told reporters that the court has issued the order to keep up the sanctity and solemnity of Central Shaheed Minar.
The court also asked to preserve the grave beside the Shaheed Minar, he said.
Besides, the HC also issued a rule asking the authorities why order should not be given to protect the land of Central Shaheed Minar.
The respondents are: Vice Chancellor of DU, Dhaka South City Corporation, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department and its Executive Engineer.
Earlier on February 22, 2012, the High Court issued a rule in this connection, taking into cognizance the petition filed by Prof Muntasir Mamun following the publication of a news report about the construction of a so-called shrine around Shaheed Minar.
The report was published on February 20 in a national daily.
