HC summons OC, UP chairman over whipping up labourer


Dhaka, Jun 22 – The High Court summoned the officer-in-charge of Chandraganj Police Station, Moktar Hossain and Dattapara union parishad chairman Ahsanul Kabir of Laxmipur for whipping a day labourer during a local arbitration.An HC bench of Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty passed the order following a petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer Taseb Hossain on Wednesday.
The court also asked them to appear before the court on July 3 to explain the incident of whipping.
Besides, the court asked the superintendent of Laxmipur police to provide security to the family of the victims and took legal action against those involved in the incident.
Earlier, the Supreme Court lawyer Taseb Hossain filed a writ petition before the court after placing a report of torturing a day labourer during village arbitration, published in different media.
According to the report, the supporters of Dattapara union parishad chairman Ahsanul Kabir, forcibly took Nurul Amin, a day labourer, to a village arbitration following an allegation brought by one Shahid against him on May 29.
Later, Jahangir Alam, a village police whipped 10-11 times to Nurul Amin and forced him to seek apology to Shahid and his wife over a trifling mater.
The video footage of the incident went viral in the social networking site which triggered a widespread outcry.
Besides, Shipon Barua, sub-inspector of Dattapara Police Camp, filed a case against seven people with Chandraganj Police Station. Police, meanwhile, also arrested four people in this connection. – UNB
