I am innocent, vested quarter influenced graft case IO: Khaleda

Dhaka – BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday accused Harun-or-Rashid, Investigative Officer (IO) in her case of giving untrue and baseless report against her.
The Investigative Office influenced by vested quarters and being angered has given an untrue statement before the court against me,” she said while delivering her incomplete self-defence statement before the court in Zia Charitable Trust corruption case for the sixth day.The BNP chief pleaded not guilty and demanded justice and claimed that the IO’s statement against her “totally baseless, fabricated and ill-motivated.”
She made the appeal after Judge Md Akhteruzzaman of the Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka read out charges and asked her whether she was guilty or not.
In reply to a question, the BNP chief told the court she would place her self-defence statement in written format and submit a list of defence witnesses in the case.
Khaleda Zia on Thursday told the Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka that no one could give any evidence of her link with the Zia Orphanage Trust.
After the hearing, the makeshift court at Bakshibazar fixed November 30 for next hearing.
Khaleda said that no witness in any statement has made such a claim that she was involved in taking any donation from the orphanage fund by misusing power as the prime minister.
Terming the IO as loyal to the government, the former premier said Harun-or-Rashid is a much enthusiastic person and loyal to the government.
She mentioned that this IO had been sacked from Anti-Corruption Commission in 2005 that’s why he was aggrieved against me and the government chose him to use him against us. She also questioned the appointment of Harun-or-Rashid in 1979.
“This official has carried out investigation and submitted his report being angered against me and at the willingness of vested quarters and their directives. He has also given untrue witness before the court against me,” she added.
Khaleda alleged that her opponent political party has been tarnishing her image y carrying out propaganda against her. She also reiterated that she personally has no link with Zia Orphanage Trust.
The BNP chief reached the court at about 11:30 am and gave her self-defence statement for the sixth day.
Later, ACC lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kajal told the court that in her statement Khaleda brought personal talks and accused her of attacking the IO personally.
Khaleda’s counsel demanded permanent bail to the BNP chief but the court rejected the submission.
In July 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Ramna police accusing Khaleda, her eldest son Tarique and four others of misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore that had come as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
In 2011, Anti-Corruption Commission filed Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon police, accusing four, including Khaleda, of abusing power to raise funds for the trust from unknown sources. – Staff Reporter
