Dhaka –Bangladesh Women’s cricket team made a flying start in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier with a huge 118-run victory against Papua New Guinea (PNG) in their Group ‘B’ match at Colombo Cricket Club Ground on Tuesday.Papua New Guinea women were bundled out for 97 in 32.1 overs replying to Bangladesh’s moderate figure of 215/6 in 50 overs, including two half centuries by Sharmin Akhter and Fargana Hoque.PNG skipper Pauke Siaka stayed for top-scoring 32 runs while Konio Oala (29) and Tanya Ruman (20) were the other double figure scorers for the side.Bangladesh skipper Rumana Ahmed, Salma Khatun, Panna Ghosh and Jahanara Alam captured two wickets each while Khadija Tul Kubra took one to blow out PNG’s batting line. To set Bangladesh’s rhythm in the top-order, Sharmin Akhter faced 86 balls for 56 while Fargana 72 balls for 51 runs, both fired seven boundaries each in their innings.The unbeaten 7th pair between Salma Khatun and Shaila Sharmin did the remaining job in the end contributing 55 in 9.1 overs, starting from 160/6 in 40.5 overs.Salma scored not out 32 off 31 balls, including four boundaries while Sanjida Islam (28), Shaila Sharmin (20 not out) and Nigar Sultana added (14) were the other scorers for Bangladesh.Opening the innings with bat after winning the toss, Bangladesh opener Sharmin Sultana narrowly tackled Ravina Oa’s 1st spell by giving a maiden-over. Mairi Tom’s 2nd ball of the 1st spell successfully departed Sharmin Sultana, was caught by Pauke Siaka, with duck in 1.2 overs when the team collection was only one.After Sharmin Sultana’s departure, Sharmin Akhter continued with Sanjida Islam in the 2nd wicket of 51 in 14.3, before Sibona Jimmy bowled out Sanjida at 52/2 in 15.5 overs.Fargana Hoque came to pair Sharmin Akhter in the 3rd wicket and repaired the top-order tune playing an innings of 69 in 15 overs that led the team total a decent figure of 121/3 in 30.5 overs.
