ID cards distribution among fishermen begins


Distribution of identity cards with photos among the fishermen of Sadar upazila began in the district aimed at bringing them under different subsidized programmes of the government.Sadar upazila fisheries office prepared the ID cards for the 1,937 fishermen under Fishermen Registration and ID Card Distribution project while the government of Bangladesh provided the fund, official sources said.Senior upazila fisheries official M. Abu Sayed said due to lack of their proper identities they could not avail of the government assistance during the lean period.The ID card would help ensure the fishermen to get different subsidies and facilities from the government and other organizations to pass their days without hardship , he also said.Whip of the Bangladesh Parliament and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini formally inaugurated the ID cards distribution programme among the fishermen of the upazila as the chief guest on Tuesday.On the opening day, a total of 56 ID cards were distributed among 56 fishermen of Gaibandha Municipality area in a function held at the auditorium of Zilla Parishad with additional deputy commissioner Abu Bakar Siddique in the chair.Speaking on the occasion, whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini said after assuming power in 2009 the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had been working relentlessly for overall development of the fisheries sector.As part of the development activities, the government is distributing ID cards with photos to the fishermen of the country through department of fisheries to bring them under different facilities, the whip added.
District fisheries officer M. Abdul Latif said initiative had been taken to distribute ID cards for the fishermen of other six upazilas of the district as early as possible. -BSS, Gaibandha
