IGP slams Hefajat for silence over terror attacks

Dhaka-Taking a swipe at Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh leadership for keeping mum over the Gulshan and Sholakia ‘militant’ attacks, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Saturday said their silence proves they are with militancy.“Why are you silent? Why aren’t you becoming vocal against militants? If you keep mum that will prove you support militancy,” he said while speaking at a programme at Kishoreganj Police Lines commemorating the two policemen killed in the ‘militant’ attack at Sholakia.
Terming those involved in militant activities the enemies of Islam and humanity, the IGP called for protecting children from their clutches.
He also described militancy as a national problem, saying an evil attempt is on to make Bangladesh a dysfunctional country like Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.
The police chief claimed that militants arrested in connection with the Gulshan and Sholakia attacks confessed that they had contacts with each other.
Deputy Inspector General (Dhaka Range) SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman, DIG (Mymensingh Range) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and Deputy Commissioner of Kishoreganj M Azimuddin Biswas, among others, spoke at the event held with Police Super Anwar Hossain Khan in the chair.
Four people, including two policemen, were killed and 12 others injured in a bomb attack coupled with an exchange of gunfire after terrorists attacked a makeshift police check-post near Sholakia Eidgah in Sadar upazila on Thursday morning.
