Jamaat Ameer, Secy Gen 6 others on 10-day remand

Dhaka – The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday placed Jamaat-e- Islami Ameer Maqbul Ahmad, its Secretary-General Dr Shafiqur Rahman and six other top leaders on 10 days’ remand in two cases lodged under the Explosive Substances Act, Arms Act and for conducting sabotage activities.Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi passed the order after hearing. Earlier, police sought 20 days’ remand for each accused, who were shown arrested in two cases on Tuesday afternoon.
The cases were filed with Kadamtoli Police Station for creating anarchy among people during Durga Puja and Asurah and hatching a conspiracy to topple the incumbent government.
The police of Metropolitan Detective Brach detained nine top Jamaat leaders from the capital’s Uttara Sector 6 last night for holding a secret meeting there to carry out subversive activities. Later, the law enforcers took them to DB office of Minto Road at about 10.15 am on Tuesday.
Others, who were put on remand are Party Secretary General’s personal secretary Nazrul Islam, Chittagong South District Ameer Zafar Sadeque, Chittagong City Ameer Md Shahjahan, Secretary Nazrul Islam and Jamaat leader Saiful Islam.
Jamaat's Nayeb-e- Ameer Mia Golam Parwar, also a former MP from Khulna-5, is among the detainees, but he was not put on remand. – Special Correspondent
