Jamaat called Hartal today

Dhaka-The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called a dawn-to-dusk nationwide hartal for today (Wednesday) protesting the death penalty awarded to its central executive committee member Mir Quasem Ali.Acting secretary general of Jamaat Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the programme through a press statement soon after the review verdict on Mir Quasem Ali appeal was pronounced.
The Jamaat leader claimed that Mir Quashem has been deprived from justice and said the people did not accept the verdict.
“The government is killing Jamaat’s top leaders one after another in a planned manner… Mir Quasem Ali is a victim of the government’s conspiracy. The war crime allegations against our leader are baseless and the government tries to kill him implicating in false cases,” said the Jamaat leader.
He called upon the party leaders and activists to observe the hartal peacefully.
Earlier, Supreme Court Appellate Division rejected the review appeal of the Jamaat leader and upheld his death penalty awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971.
The vehicles meant for emergency services will remain out of the purview of the hartal, said the press statement signed by a central publicity committee member.-STAFF REPORTER
