Journos injured, Asstt Proctor beaten in JU BCL clash


At least three Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men, three journalists and an assistant Proctor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League of JU unit on Tuesday noon.
The injured are, Joni Alam, 22, president of Jahangirnaar University Journalist Association (JUJA) also the campus correspondent of national dailies, The Independent, Shafiq of and Alamgir hossain Mijan, the reporter of Green Watch Dhaka and assistant proctor Zulkarnain of Archeology department.Mamunir Rashid, secretary of JU Journalist Association, condemned the assault on journalists and demanded punishment to the involved BCL men.
Journalists alleged that BCL men intentionally committed the offence of assaulting as some journalists along with students caught in red handed the BCL man with his girl friend, the BCL man claimed, in an “objectionable situation” in a female student toilet at Zahir Raihan auditorium of JU, and handed them over proctorial body, yesterday noon.
Source said, the clashes ensued whentwo groups of BCL men led by Abdur Rahim Jewel (expelled from BCL), Sanowar Hossain (who lost studentship and was expelled from BCL) of Mir Mosharaf Hossain hall and Jewel Rana of AFM Kamal Uddin hall were locked in an altercation over grabbing a tender of the university in front of central library of JU.
BCL sources said , Jewel Rana (Philosophy, masters of AFM Kamal Uddin hall) assaulted Abdur Rahim Jewel (journalism and media studies, third year of MMHH) as Jewel demanded extortion in one of Abdur Rahim’s relative who got the tender which was run for selling some trees destroyed in rainstorm recently on campus.
Latter, a group of BCL activists of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall (MMHH) lead by expelled leader Sanwar and Ashfiq Sarkar, secretary of MMHH unit BCL, Robiul Islam of URP dept. armed with sharp weapons and indigenous weapons attempted to attack the A.F.M Kamaml Uddin Hall while the BCL cadres beat up three journalist in front of Kobir Soroni and tried to snatch their cameras as they tried to take a photo of them.
A chase and counter chase took place between the two groups (AFM Kamal Uddin Hall and MMHH) of BCL cadres.
The BCL cadres of MMHH also tried to beat up an assistant Proctor on the spot while the Proctorial body and house tutors of both halls tried to control the situation.
At around 5:00pm, after one hour of chase and counterchase the situation was brought under control by the proctorial body and house tutors.
JU register told to this correspondent, “an emergency syndicate meeting was underway to solve the problem”. – JU Correspondent
