JU student falls sick after ragging

Savar (Dhaka), Feb 10 – A fresher student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) is suffering from mental imbalance as he sustained severe mental torture by his senior fellows.In the name of acquaintance, some 2nd semester students of the same department allegedly tortured him, mentally and physically, that left him traumatised.
The victim was identified as Mizanur Rahman, a 1 st semester student of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department, enrolled under the session of 2017-18.
On information, Mizanur, along with his three fellows of the same department, was attached to Shahid Salam Barkat (SSB) Hall. But the 46 th batch students warned them to stay neither in SSB Hall nor in Al Beruny Hall. He was threatened over his sticking to staying in SSB Hall while another two were moved to other halls.
The incident was reportedly commenced on Wednesday. But it took air on Friday after Mizanur falls sick and is admitted to the university medical center.
According to the victim’s friends, ‘The 2nd semester students of the CSE dept., Wednesday noon, called Mizanur to a separate room. Then he was abused with rough words hurled at him and was physically tortured’.
Fellows said, he was looking abnormal after he is back to the hall from the department. In the midnight he started shouting and doing irrelevant deeds.
He was too traumatized and failed to identify his relatives. He failed to recognize his father when he came to see him on Friday.
The chairman of History department Prof Dr. ATM Atikur Rahman, on Friday night, confirmed of interrogating a total of four of CSE department, accused of involvement in the incident.
They are Mamun, Himel, Shudipto and Anwar, the class representative.
While interrogation, they tried to avoid the issue of ragging. Their approaches refer their involvement in ragging, he added.
Assoc. Prof of CSE department Mostafizur Rahman said: ‘We will recommend, from the academic meeting on Monday, for the highest punishment of ragging to the university authorities’.
Contacted, uncle of the victim Joynal Abedin, said: ‘His condition is deteriorating. He is still in trauma to see us. We are managing to visit a doctor for better treatment’.
Mizanur was shifted to his uncle’s house of Savar after the incident. – JU Correspondent
