JU students to continue demo till withdrawal of case


Dhaka – Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Wednesday vowed to continue demonstrations until the case, lodged against their 56 fellows in connection with vandalising VC’s residence, is withdrawn.The oath was taken from a protest meeting as the university authorities failed to begin the case withdrawal procedures within the stipulated time.
The protestors brought out a procession under the banner of ‘Protibader Nam Jahangirnagar’ (Name of Protest is Jahangirnagar), from the JU Social Science Faculty building. It ended after a short meeting in front of the Registrar building.
Md. Didar, also accused in the case, said:, ‘The university authorities took no move to withdraw the false case though the stipulated time of seven days ended on Tuesday. So the students again began demonstration that will compel the authorities to withdraw the case’.
Earlier, demanding withdrawal of the case, a total of 8 students had gone on hunger strike. Then the strikers withdrew their program on an assurance by the authorities of an amicable solution.
Mentionably, on May 26, two JU students were in killed in a road crash. Then the general students had been demonstrating over the death of their two fellows and put blockade on the Dhaka-Aricha highway. At one stage, police charged teargas and rubber bullets to disperse them which left 10 injured including a journo.
Later, the agitating students vandalized JU VC’s residence in protest. Because of the unrest situation, the authorities shut down the campus on May 28 and lodged a against 56 students bringing the allegation of assaulting teachers and attempting to murder. – JU Correspondent
