Judge stops bail of Mayor Nasir in journo murder case

Dhaka – The Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the bail of suspect KM Nasir Uddin, granted by a High Court bench in the Shirajganj journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul murder case.A petition seeking the bail was filed on Sunday, said Attorney General-in- Charge Murad Reza. The chamber judge heard the petition and stayed the bail for eight weeks, he said.
The High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Razik-Al- Jalil granted bail to expelled Shahjadpur Awami League leader Nasir Uddin on April 13.
On Feb 2, a complaint alleged that the brothers of Mayor Miru, Mintu and Pintu, had threatened Shahjadpur Government College- Bangladesh Chhatra League President Bijoy Mahmud with weapons and broke his hands and legs. As the news of the incident spread, activists surrounded the home of the mayor.
According to media reports, two shotguns of Mayor Miru were discharged. Daily Samakal’s Shahjadpur Correspondent Abdul Hakim Shimul, who went to cover the clash, was shot and killed.
Shimul’s wife, Nurunnahar Begum, filed the murder case accusing the mayor and 17 others. Another case was filed in connection with the violence inflicted on Bijoy. – Special Correspondent
