Justice Wahab Miah Acting CJ until Sinha’s return


Dhaka – Senior Judge of the Appellate Division Md Abdul Wahab will now perform as Acting Chief Justice until Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha returns to his office.President Abdul Hamid yesterday extended the tenure of leave of the CJ upon his application and entrusted Justice Md Abdul Wahab the charge of the Chief Justice until he returns to his duties.
Ministry for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs yesterday issued an order in this regard following signing on Sinha’s letter by the President and the Prime Minister. In his letter sent earlier to the President, the CJ, who went on one month leave, expressed his willingness to stay abroad until November 10.
The order signed by Law Secretary Abu Saleh Md Zahirul Haque stated that the President had granted a 30-day (October 10-November 1) leave. As the Chief Justice wished to stay more days in abroad the President issued the new order, it said.
Justice Md Abdul Wahab Miah will perform duties of the Chief Justice during the Chief Justice’s stay in abroad during his extended leave from November 2 to November 10 or until he returns is office, the order added.
The Chief Justice sent a letter to the President on Tuesday informing him that he wants to stay abroad from October 13 to November 10 on health ground. President Abdul Hamid singed on the Government Order (GO) on Wednesday. Earlier Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Law Minister Anisul Huq signed on the GO on the same day.
The President entrusted the responsibility in accordance with article 97 of the constitution.
The Chief Justice planned to go to Australia on health ground. He along with his spouse Sushama Sinha will stay with his elder daughter Suchana Sinha.
The leave of CJ, who has become a subject of discussions at different levels following the verdict that scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution, led to a fresh discussion in the political arena.
The BNP alleged that the CJ was forced to go for leave due to the verdict while the government claims that the CJ went on leave on his health ground. – Staff Reporter
