Khaleda reaffirms unity of 20-party, departing for London Friday

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday held a meeting with top leaders of 20-party opposition alliance dispelling the remours about disunity within the coalition.
“The unity of 20-party alliance is there and it will remain intact in future also. There is no scope to be confused” she told the leaders as some of them drew her attention to media reports and speculations in different quarters on the alliance splitting.The alliance’s meeting was held at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office with Khaleda Zia in the chair about eight months after the last meet and two days ahead of Khaleda Zia’s London visit.
The former premier is likely to leave for London on Friday for treatment of her eye problems amid speculation that cutting of her birthday cake on August 15 might be avoided.
Senior Awami League leaders including general secretary Ashraful Islam recently called upon her not to celebrate her birth anniversary on August 15 which is observed as the National Mourning Day to mark the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his family members.
The one and hour and a half long meeting began at 8:45pm and reiterated the alliance’s stand that they would not take part in any election under a political government and it should be under a non-partisan administration.
On Jamaat’s existence in the alliance Khaleda Zia made it clear that “Jamaat is very much with us.”
A top leader of an ally said BJP chief Andalib Rahman Partha questioned Jamaat leader as to why they do not speak about their position on the speculation of splitting the alliance. Replying to him Jamaat leader Abdul Halim claimed that they are speaking about it, he added.
Sources said the meeting condemned the killing of blogger Niladri Niloy and held the government responsible for it.
Another leader said Khaleda Zia asked the alliance leaders to take preparation for the movement after reorganising their respective parties.
On rumoured merging Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh and LDP with BNP Khaleda Zia told the meeting that she had so far no discussion with them on this.
The outcome of the meeting will be disclosed through a press conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office at 11:00am Thursday after a secretary general level meeting of the alliance.
