Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, the workers’ front of BNP, is all set to stage a rally in the city’s historic Suhrawardy Udyan on Thursday, marking the May Day. “We’ve completed all the necessary preparations for arranging the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on the May Day. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address it as the chief guest,” said BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman. He was addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office after a joint meeting of the party. Noman said they have already sought permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for holding the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on the May Day. Asked whether they got the permission, he said, “We hope we’ll be allowed to hold the rally. As it’s a programme marking an international day, we think the government will consider it positively.” The BNP leader said they are likely to announce some programmes, including submission of memoranda to the government for duly compensating the families of the Rana Plaza victims, and forcing the government to establish workers’ rights. Replying to another question whether they have any alternative venue plan, Noman said: “We’re not expecting any negative response from the government, and the rally will be held at Suhrawardy Udyan.” At the joint meeting, he said leaders of the party and its associate bodies have been asked to work sincerely from their respective sides to make the rally a success. BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas, vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, chairperson’s adviser Ahmed Azam Khan and joint secretary general Mizanur Rahman Minu were, among others, present. – UNB
