She along in her motorcade left the place hurriedly and went to Moghbazar to save themselves from the attack.
Witnesses said miscreants threw brickbats at Khaleda Zia and her motorcade from the roofs of different buildings adjacent to the spot of her rally. Some of the miscreants attacked them with sticks and sharp weapons.
Khaleda Zia came out of her Gulshan residence at around 4:30pm and came to Karwan Bazar after conducting campaign at Gulshan 2, Banani and Farmgate area where also she came under attack of the miscreants.
Khaleda Zia went out for electioneering on Monday day without police protection as police personnel deployed for her security purpose were withdrawn in the same morning.
When the miscreants started throwing brick chips at Khaleda Zia, she warned them that the result of their deeds she alleged at the backing of the government will not be any good for them.
She said there is no democracy in the country, people do not have right for vote as the tyrant and illegal government has held up their all kinds of rights.
BNP-led 20-party called countrywide dawn to dusk hartal except Dhaka City and Chittagong City on Wednesday protesting the attack on Khaleda Zia and creating impediments to electoral campaign.
BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed at a press briefing at BNP central office at Nayapaltan announced the hartal programme adding that protest programmes will be observed across the country including Dhaka and Chittagong today (Tuesday).
Moudud alleged that ruling Awami League has conducted the attack on Khaleda Zia as the ruling party is afraid that it will be defeated in the coming DCC and CCC polls. He condemned the attack and made strong protest against it.
Condemning the attack on Khaleda’s motorcade, he warned that the government should not continue such terror attacks to force them to think of other means.
Moudud termed the attack as pre-planned saying that the attack on Khaleda hours after withdrawal of police from her residence proved that it was pre-planned.
He alleged that the government had carried out the attack sensing the defeat in the forthcoming city corporation polls on April 28.
The BNP leader said the Prime Minister and her colleagues’ recent remarks that Khaleda would be resisted if she takes part in electioneering provoked the AL terrorist to carry out the attack on the former premier.
Replying to a question, he said Khaleda would continue her campaign in favour of BNP-baked mayoral candidates despite intimidations.
He said the people would give silent reply to the government attacks though their ballots.
BNP joint secretary general Mohammad Shajahan and Barrister Mahbub Udidn Khokan and international affairs secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon, among others, were present5 on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
