A Dhaka court on Thursday exempted former MP Khan Tipu Sultan, his wife Dr Jesmin Ara Begum and their son from charges in Dr Shamarukh Mahjabin murder case.
Magistrate Ashok Kumar Datta of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka passed the order after hearing the submissions of both sides on Thursday afternoon. The Magistrate also rejected the no-confidence petition of Dr Mahjabin alias Sumi’s father Nurul Islam against the final report that found no trace of murder against the accused persons.
Sumi was found hanging in her bathroom of her father-in-law’s Dhanmondi residence on November 13, last year. Sumi’s father Engineer Nurul Islam has been claiming that the members of her father-in-law’s family killed her and tried to establish it of as a case suicide.
However, the forensic report of the victim says that committed suicide, but her father, a retired engineer of PWD refused to accept the report, claiming that Tipu Sultan, a former of ruling Awami League elected from a Jessore constituency attempted to influence the report.
After the incident, police arrested Humayun Sultan, the husband of the victim and a son of Tipu Sultan and he was later placed on remand for interrogation. But Humayun was enlarged on bail by the High Court.
Dr Shamarukh Mahjabin Sumi married Humayun two years back and she was also studying FCPS at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. – Court Correspondent
