Mobile banking suspended for a day at EC’s request

Bangladesh Bank on Monday ordered the suspension of all mobile banking transactions from 5pm today (Monday) to 5pm Tuesday upon a request from the Election Commission (EC).
Though the central bank earlier directed the institutions concerned to limit transactions through mobile financial services within Tk 1,000 with immediate effect, the EC suggested suspension of such transactions fully till 5pm Tuesday from 5pm today (Monday). Following the directives, no one will be allowed to transact under cash-in, cash-out, P2P, merchant payment and mobile top-up.
The directives have been conveyed to mobile financial service providers and subsidiaries. The ban will go automatically after the time bar.
The decision apparently came to avert the bad practice of vote buying, which has reportedly already started in some cases.
The elections to the three city corporations will be held on Tuesday in Dhaka and Chittagong. – UNB
