More tourists despite travel alerts:Menon

Bangladesh has received more tourists than usual this year despite the travel alerts issued by some countries including the US. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon has made the claim.“Bangladesh is safer than the US. Some people are trying to project Bangladesh as an unsafe place because of their own political interests,” Menon said at an event of US-Bangla Airlines in a Cox’s Bazar hotel on Friday.“Even after more than one hundred people were killed in terror attacks in Paris, the climate summit took place there as planned. But when three foreigners (actual number two) were killed in isolated incidents in Bangladesh, they issued [travel]alerts. This is just not acceptable.”Between Oct 1 and Nov 15 in 2014, the number of tourists visiting Bangladesh was 77,587, the minister said.“More than 87,000 foreigners came here during the same period this year. This proves that Bangladesh is a safe country.”The minister also spoke about different government plans to boost tourism.Local lawmaker Shaimum Sarwar Kamal, Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, Charge d`affaires Christian Tardif of the Canadian High Commission in Bangladesh and Managing Director of US-Bangla Airlines Abdullah Al Mamun, among others, spoke at the programme.
