Grenwatch DeskPolice arrested Hefajat-e-Islam nayeb-e-ameer Mufti Izharul Islam’s son Harun Izharul from Isapur area of Hathazari upazila early Wednesday in cases on charge of having connection with the Monday’s blast at a local madrasah in the Chittagong city.A team of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) with the help of Hathazari thana police searched the area in the early hours and arrested him, said CMP Assistant Commissioner (Detectives) Kamruzzaman.
On Tuesday, Mufti Izharul Islam and his son Harun Izharul along with 10 others were implicated in two cases related to the ‘mysterious’ explosion in a room on the 1st floor of the four-storey hostel of Jamiatul Ulum Islami Madrasa at Lalkhan Bazar in Chittagong city.
The CMP commissioner said, after the explosion, Harun went into hiding in an expatriate’s house in the area.
After the blast, two of five students of the madrasah who sustained serious burn injuries have died.
The Hathazari Madrasah of Mufti Izaharul Islam, whose academic head Allama Ahmed Shafi, is also the head of Quami Madrasah Education Board – through the recent developments brought him to the fore as the head of Hezat-e-Islam – is located in a different sub-district from the Madrasah at Lalkhan Bazar where the mysterious explosion took place on Sunday.
Mufti Izaharul Islam did bifurcate then BNP-leaning Islami Oiky Jote (IOJ) and floated another faction under his own leadership and lent support to the Awami League and its alliance from second half of the last decade. He had also adorned some leaders in the upper echelon of the national leadership with glorious titles.
People close to him say he and his son have fallen in disgrace for their roles in the movement of Hifazat-e-Islami that demanded restoration of trust and faith in Almighty Allah in the Constitution and severe punishment of blasphemous bloggers.
Later a court on placed Mufti Harun Bin Izhar on a 10-day remand in two cases filed in connection with the Monday’s blast at a local madrasah in the port city. The court also put Harun’s associate Zunayed, an accused in the case filed under the Explosives Act, on one-day remand. Metropolitan Magistrate Syed Masfiqul Islam passed the order after police produced Harun and Zunayed before the court and sought 14-day remand for Harun in two cases and 7-day remand for Zunayed in one case. Earlier in the day, Khulshi police arrested Harun and Zunayed from Isapur area of Hathazari upazila. Harun went into hiding in an expatriate’s house in the area after the explosion, said CMP Assistant Commissioner (Detectives) Kamruzzaman. On Tuesday, 12 persons including Mufti Izharul Islam and Harun Izhar were made accused in the two cases for their suspected links with the ‘mysterious’ explosion in a room on the 1st floor of the four-storey hostel of Jamiatul Ulum Islami Madrasa at Lalkhan Bazar in the city. In the blast, five students of the madrasah sustained serious burn injuries. Meanwhile, two of the injured succumbed to their injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital early Tuesday and today (Wednesday). – UNB
