BNP on Sunday cautioned that the entire nation may pay a heavy price for the government’s denial to forge a national unity to tackle the growing militancy and terrorism. The party also said a political unity is a must for people’s unity to eliminate extremism.
“We may pay price dearly for the government’s refusal to forge people’s unity. We pray to Allah to protect us. We want the government to realise the reality,” said BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan.
Speaking at a doa and milad mahfil, he came up with the remarks reacting to the Prime Minister’s rebuttal to forge a unity with BNP.
Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal arranged the programme on the ground floor of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office seeking the early recovery of its ailing senior secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a press conference ruled out the possibility of forging any national unity to curb terrorism and militancy with those involved in terrorism, militancy and war crimes.
“A national consensus among the mass people has developed after the Gulshan and Sholakia terror attacks,” she said.
Dismissing the Prime Minister’s allegation, Nazrul said BNP does not do the politics of terrorism as it is a patriotic party. “We’ve repeatedly said we’re against the brutal killings and militant activities that have been carried out in the country. We don’t do such politics.”
“I’ve heard the Prime Minister herself at the press conference saying she cant’ talk now louder unlike in the past… this situation has created as the government given the real offenders to be organised by blaming BNP and Jamaat for secret killings, including foreigners’ ones,” he said.
The BNP leader demanded they have also been demanding that the government track down the perpetrators of the terror attacks and mete out exemplary punishment to stop such incident. “But from the top to bottom of the government have been doing the politics of blame game, deteriorating the situation gradually.”
He said they still want the real offenders to be arrested and punished. “But, we’ve seen the Prime even today (Sunday) talked about fire terrorism and what had happened in the past.”
Nazrul said their party chief has called for the unity only to curb militancy, not to go to power or oust the government.
He said not only BNP but also all other political parties and social organisations are calling upon for the national unity under the current context of the country. “But, the government is not paying heed to it and this negative response may be dangerous for the country.”
The BNP leader urged the government to respond to their chairperson’s call to forge a national unity shunning its obstinacy. “Motivate people, encourage them and help them to be courageous so that they can put up a united resistance against militancy and terrorism.”
Referring to Turkish people’s united resistance against a military coup, he said people have thwarted a coup there defeating army. “We now need such a united resistance of people against militancy and terrorism here.”
The Prime Minster also feared that terrorists may carry out more attacks in the country, he said adding there is to alterative to people’s unity to resist it.
