The government won’t allow to ply any unfit launch to carry passengers during holidays on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, shipping minister Shajahan Khan said yesterday.“The ministry has clear decision that it will never allow any unfit launch to carry passengers,” he told reporters after a signing ceremony of the annual performance agreement with 10 departments held at the secretariat.
He also announced a ban on unfit launch for traveling during eid-vacations.
The shipping minister said, “you (journalist) have previous experience and your query is not unfounded. There was no discipline in the shipping sectors. As a result, the shipping accidents occurred randomly caused of vessel constructors not follow rules to make vessels.”
“Now, we give some directions on shipping construction. Such as, at first, they have to need approval for ship’s design. We didn’t allow some vessels to go for operation after their full construction because of some constructions faults, ”the minister said in reply to another query.
“There is no guilty in denting-painting and renovation of vessels. It is a legal process. We do not give fitness certificate without it,” Shajahan Khan said.
The government is also alert on unfit launches and overloading to protect passengers during Eid vacations, he said, adding, “we will deploy additional law enforcing members to ensure security.”
He further said, “we enjoy Eid vacations but our officials won’t enjoy Eid vacation with their family members. They have to spend busy time to protect passengers’ interest when all people enjoy Eid festival.”
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) and Private Launch owners jointly start a special service from July 1, the minister said.
“There will be magistrate, police and other related officials to prevent overloading. Initiatives have taken for safe journey to avert any unwanted situation,” Shajahan Khan added.
