Dhaka, May 31 – Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said many media personalities who are popular would get party tickets for contesting in the next general elections scheduled to be held in the yearend.“There will be a surprise in distributing AL nominations this time. Many popular faces from cultural, sports arena and mass media have shown their interest to contest the next polls from Awami League. And we are discussing the issue in our party forum,” he said.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister was talking to the reporters after holding a meeting with the party’s departmental secretaries at the AL president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.
About the participation of cricketers Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Shakib Al Hasan in the next polls, Quader said they (Mashrafe and Shakib) are not thinking about contesting the next polls right now.
“I talked with Sakib, he said he doesn’t want to involve in politics before the World Cup Cricket. But whom we will give party tickets for the next polls, will have to be popular and winnable,” he said.
Meanwhile, the party is also planning to hold a big rally at the Suhrawardi Udyan on July 7 to celebrate the D.litt degree of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Earlier, on May 26, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was conferred an honorary Doctorate of literature by the Kazi Nazrul University in India.
Replying to a question over Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) committee, AL general secretary said the BCL committee will be announced soon. “AL president Sheikh Hasina is taking care of the matter so we have nothing to say about the issue but I hope the committee will be announced soon,” he said.
In response to another question over the BNP’s demand for holding the next polls after dissolving the current parliament, Quader brushed aside the BNP’s demand saying it is impossible, the next polls will be held as per the constitution.
The party general secretary also disclosed that the party’s new central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city will be inaugurated on its founding anniversary on June 23.
AL’s new 10-storied building is being constructed with all modern amenities. The new building will have the conference hall, seminar room, digital library, VIP lounge, cafeteria, journalist lounge, car parking, and dormitory. – Staff Reporter
