Potholed roads woes of Comilla city

Most of around 500 kilometre roads of the Comilla City Corporation area have developed cracks and potholes in numerous places, causing inconvenience to movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
In the rainy season, the roads become a quagmire after many parts of them erode into holes.Even after a short rainfall, rainwater covers the potholes of the roads due to improper drainage system. In many areas, potholes have turned into shallow pools due to stagnant water, creating hurdles for vehicles to cross.Lack of repair work, absence of system to drain out the rainwater and poor maintenance by the authorities concerned are responsible for the water-logging keeping these roads in awful condition. After visiting some areas in the city, this correspondent found that deep potholes have been created on the roads from Dharmapur East Chaumuhani to Badshah Mia Bazar in the Station Road area, causing sufferings to vehicles and pedestrians.
Besides, big potholes have developed in many areas, including Kandirpar Pubali Chattar to Dharmapur area on the Nazrul Avenue, Ranirbazar Road and Dharmapur to Victoria College Road.
These roads go under water even after a slight rainfall. As the roads are not fit for vehicular movement, vehicles like rickshaw,auto-rickshaw and easy-bike have to struggle to cross the roads amid high risk of accident.Sometimes, vehicles fall in danger after toppling over on the roads.Sufferings of the city dwellers in the area from Kandirpar to Police Line know no bound due to the dilapidated condition of the road.Besides, the road from Deputy Commissioner’s office to Kaliajuri PTI School is submerged by rainwater easily as several potholes have developed in the area it being low-lying.
Hedayet Ullah, lecturer of Comilla Victoria Government College, said the road from Pubali Chattar to Dharmapur lies battered with so many potholes and remains unfit for use of commuters.Shah Alam Majumdar, a businessman and resident of the city, claimed that the Station Road is an important road in the metropolis and so many big potholes have been created on the road as it has not seen any repair work in the last 10 years. He also urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps for reconstruction of the road.Sources at the engineering section of Nagar Bhaban said the drainage work of Kandirpar to Police Line Road has started and after completion of the work, the road repair work will start soon. They also assured of immediate start of the repair work of the Station Road.Sheikh Mohammad Nurullah, executive engineer of Comilla City Corporation, said a tender has been floated for reconstruction works of 116 roads, involving Tk12.85 crore in the city. The reconstruction works of the roads are expected to start by July 13, he said.Besides, the authorities will also take an initiative to develop the roads and drainage system of the city. -UNB, Comilla
