Dhaka – Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Sunday said the government move to set up coal-fired power plant at Rampal is a suicidal decision
as it will destroy the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest.
“It’s a suicidal project …it’ll destroy the Sundarbans. The people of the country stood against the government’s imprudent decision,” the
former President said in a statement urging the government to immediately rescind the project.
Ershad said there are suitable places elsewhere in Bangladesh for coal-fired power plant. “Why it should be set up near the Sundarbans?
We can’t accept such a decision.”
The JP Chairman urged the government to refrain from taking any project that the country’s people do no want. “I urge the government
to immediately cancel the Rampal power plant.”
He also said the Sundarbans is a precious gift of the Almighty and the nation cannot accept any harm to it.
Amid the growing demand for its cancellation, the government on Thursday said some individuals and organisations are misleading people
through propaganda against the proposed 1320-MM coal-fired Rampal thermal power plant to be built near the Sundarbans. – UNB
