President Abdul Hamid on Tuesday underscored the need for ensuring specialized treatment to remove child blindness apart from creating social awareness about the malaise. “In this regard, every quarter will have to come forward along with all concerned of the Health Department,” he said at the launching ceremony of ‘National childhood blindness reduction programme’ at Osmani Memorial Hall in the city. The event was jointly organized by National Eye Care and ORBIS International. The President said the special phenomenon of child blindness is that the children can’t say about their problem. It is not possible to get proper treatment in right time if the guardians as well as social awareness are not available in this regard. “Apart from social awareness, specialized treatment is needed for the treatment of the children’s diseases,” he added. Abdul Hamid said the future prosperity and welfare of the nation depend on the sound health of the children. “Eyesight is important for the maturity and merit development of the children. Child Blindness put negative impact on family and social life. “The children with less eyesight become burden instead of resources in the development of the economy. Moreover, it needs more expenditure to rehabilitate than removing blindness,” he added. The President said the aim of this national programme is to establish standard eye treatment for children across the country and bring 50 percent children under the service. He said the activities under the programme will play important role in implementing vision 2020 in removing curable blindness. Prime Minister’s advisor Prof Syed Modasser Ali, State Minister for Health Dr Capt (retd) Mozibur Rahman Fakir and Country Director of ORBIS International Munir Ahmed also spoke at the function held with Line Director-National Eye Care Prof Deen Mohd Noorul Huq in the chair. – UNB
