President Abdul Hamid on Monday observed that all political parties should work together for the greater welfare of the country as well as the nation.   “Having differences of opinion among political parties in a democratic country is quite natural, but we’ve to work together for the greater welfare of the country as well as the nation,” he told a reception here.   The mass reception celebration committee accorded the reception to President Abdul Hamid at Austagram Pilot High School as the country’s celebrated son hails from Kishoreganj. President’s wife Rashida Khanom was present on the occasion.   Observing that the key to flourishing democracy is to show tolerance to different opinions, mutual respect as well as to strengthen the democratic institutions, the President said, “Our responsibility is to expedite the advancement of democracy and make it more meaningful by exercising democratic rules and norms.”   Making a flashback, the President said, “Appearing before you today, many things of the past are crossing through my mind. I’m a son of haor area… I passed a large portion of my life mixing with the people of the area. I had started my political career with your help. I had roamed though all villages and unions of Austagram. I had tried to stay with the people of the haor area in their well and woes.”   Hamid continued: “The waves of haor still shake my existence. I become nostalgic when I think how many villages were destroyed and how many created in the haor.”   Observing that the people of the other parts of the country have no transparent idea about haor area, the President said, “I tried to make the area familiar to all… Whenever I got chance — in Jatiya Sangsad, meeting, seminar — I talked about the haor area. On various occasions in the past I brought foreign delegations, ministers, high government officials in the area with a view to giving them idea about the area. I put in my all-out efforts to have the haor area in development plan in a different manner for its geographical reason.”   Mentioning that it has indeed become a tough job to implement larger development plans in the haor areas due to its geographical location, Abdul Hamid said, “Despite that, we should continue the efforts. I’m an optimistic person and never give up hope. No doubt, there’ll be gradual infrastructural development in this haor area.”   He urged the well-off section of the haor area to extend their helping hands for the common people, especially for the people who are neglected and deprived in the society.   “The district Kishoreganj, surrounded by haors and rivers, is geographically backward. People of the area survive through relentless struggle with the nature. Every one of the area have to contribute from one’s respective position,” he added.   The President sought blessing from the people of the area so that he can discharge his duties bestowed upon him properly and with dignity.   Mentioning that his door was always open while he was the deputy speaker, deputy leader of opposition and speaker, Abdul Hamid said, “As President my activities are now in strict discipline. It is not possible for me to meet anyone anytime like earlier if I wish to. Nonetheless I will advise to communicate with me if anyone needs to meet me. I will try to meet you managing time.”   Hamid said, “You know that in my long political career I haven’t felicitated any injustice. I never compromise regarding principle. I always thought for the people of my area and tried to work for them.”   Afzal Hossain, MP, Rezwan Ahmed Towfiq MP and Kishoreganj Zilla Parishad administrator Zillur Rahman, among others, spoke at the function held with Rowshan Ali Khan Ashrafi in the chair. – UNB
