Professionals want Mirza Abbas to come to the open, seek votes

A pro-BNP intellectual on Sunday urged Mirza Abbas, who is contesting the mayoral post for Dhaka South City Corporation, to come out in public to campaign for the elections instead of remaiing underground.
“Mirza Abbas has to come out in public from hide out to carryout his election ignoring whatever cases were filed against him. Because it would help sway public opinion in his favour,” said founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury while addressing a discussion meeting at Jatiya Press Club.He said the people have become fed up and would give a befitting reply to the government and Election Commission through the ballot.
Speaking at the same function, Prof Emajuddin Ahmed called upon the young generation not to make any mistake in casting vote in favour of BNP-backed candidates.
“What we have failed to do, you should do that during the ensuing city polls,” he added.
Prof Emajuddin, the convenor of Adarsha Dhaka Andolon, which backs the pro-BNP candidates in Dhaka city polls, said they hope that the youths would give a befitting reply to the government on April 28.
He said it does require arms and equipment to remove fascism but it needs only people who can sweep their perpetrators away.
“There is value of people where fascism has taken roots and all demands of the people are trampled,” he said.
He assured Afroza Abbas, wife of Mirza Abbas that she is not alone in the polls campaign.
Prof Emajuddin informed that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia would introduce all the BNP backed candidates contesting the city polls at a function at Institution of Engineers Bangladesh on Wednesday.
The Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh, a pro-BNP organisation of physicians, organised the meeting demanding the release of all political prisoners including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and ensuring holding of city polls in a free and fair manner.
Presided over by Dr Azizul Haque, president of the organisation, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by member secretary of Adarsha Dhaka Andolon Shawkat Mahmud, Ruhul Amin Gazi, Mirza Abbas’s wife Afroza Abbas, DAB secretary general Dr AZM Zahid Hossain and Rafiqul Islam Bacchu.
Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury criticised the government for keeping Jamaat leader Kamaruzzaman hanging for 20 minutes for which, he said, they should seek apology from the family members of the Jamaat leader.
“I don’t oppose the trial of crimes against humanity but the government should seek apology from Kamaruzzaman family for committing crimes against humanity by keeping him hanging for 20 minutes,” he said.
He also criticised the government for not fulfilling the last wishes of the war convict Kamaruzzaman to execute him on Friday.
Afroza Abbas alleged that they are facing police obstructions to campaign for seeking votes in favour of her husband.
“Cent per cent mandate of people is in favour of us. Our victory will be ensured if we are allowed to cast our vote properly,” she added. – Staff Reporter
