Dhaka – Pragatishil Chhatra Jote, a left-leaning student organisation, on Tuesday staged demonstrations at Shahbagh intersection protesting the proposed Rampal coal-fired power plant project near world’s largest mangrove forest the Syndarbans. The demonstration disrupted traffic movement in the busy area for nearly an hour following which police dispersed the protesters.
As per their scheduled programme, the leaders and activist of Pragatishil Chhatra Jote brought out a protest rally on the Dhaka University campus around 12:30 pm demanding cancellation of the project.
When the rally marched towards Shahbagh intersection, police obstructed them in front of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
A scuffle took place between the police and party activists, leaving four people, including president of Chhatra Federation Umme Habiba Benazir, injured.
Angered by the incident, Pragatishil Chhatra Jote announced countrywide protest rallies against the project for August 18. However, they moved from the road around 1:20 pm.
The Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd (BIFPCL), a joint venture company formed by Dhaka and New Delhi, signed the contract on July 12 with Indian contractor BHEL to install the plant.
Environmental experts warn that the Rampal Power Plant project will bring more harm than good to the country, destroying the Unesco declared World Heritage site, since the climate, topography, land use pattern, wetlands, flora and fauna diversity and quality of air and water in the Sundarbans will be affected by the power plant.
