Reconstitute EC through discussions: Khaleda

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday renewed her call for reconstituting the Election Commission (EC) through discussions to protect people’s voting rights. The BNP chief came up with call on her twitter account in the afternoon.“The proposal for forming the EC based on discussions, and protecting the voting rights of all is not only an issue of BNP or an insignificant issue,” she tweeted.

“So, a dialogue is necessary. EC should not be constituted unilaterally.” Khaleda added.Earlier on November 18, the BNP chief presented a 13-point proposal on constituting a stronger EC in consultation with the political parties for ensuring a free, fair and inclusive election. She spelled out her party’s proposals as the incumbent Commission headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad is set to complete its five-year tenure on February 8, 2017.Reacting to the proposals, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said, “The so-called reform formulas placed by Begum Zia for the Election Commission are nothing but hollow and a mockery with the nation.”Following the outright denial by the ruling party, Khaleda in a tweet the following day said her proposals on the new EC formation could be a basis to initiate a dialogue for holding a competitive and inclusive national election.BNP has also sought an appointment to meet President Abdul Hamid to submit Khaleda’s proposals to him with an expectation that he will accept those and take necessary steps to hold discussions on the issue.
